Julia Montague, Enrique Abarca Ríos, and Rebekka Salzmann had the opportunity to represent the FANTOM network at the 30th Congress of the European Hematology Association (EHA) in Milan. Over the course of four days, the event brought together clinicians, researchers, and industry partners to share the latest developments in haematology. The live EHA conference was also streamed for remote participation and all talks were recorded and are accessible online. The conference offered 575 sessions, including focused sessions on lymphoid malignancies, T-cell lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, immunotherapy, clinical practices, and basic mechanisms including microenvironment interactions and chromatin architecture in hematologic disease.
On Thursday the former EHA President Prof. Antonio Almeida opened the meeting and presented the 2024 Annual Report, highlighting a 26% growth in membership, €75.9 million invested in haematology research, and 425 resulting publications. Moreover, he thanked the outgoing Board members and welcomed Prof. Konstanze Döhner as the new EHA President for 2025 to 2027. She emphasized the importance of building a future-focused and inclusive haematology community, reaffirming EHA’s commitment to advocacy, health equity, scientific excellence, and career development at all stages of the profession.
The FANTOM network hosted a booth in the Collaboration Plaza, providing a great space to connect with fellow attendees, exchange ideas, and showcase the network’s research and objectives. The atmosphere throughout the congress was dynamic and collaborative, with plenty of engaging talks and discussions.
The days were filled with interesting talks and plenty of industrial collaborators to explore. Particular sessions of interest to the fellows included the Lymphoma biology & translational research, next generation models in lymphoma, and immunotherapy in lymphoma sessions. The fellows appreciated talks by Patricia Perez Galan from Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, who spoke about advanced 3D lymphoma organoid models, as well as Prof. Carl June from the University of Pennsylvania, who explained advances in Armored CAR T cell therapy in lymphoma. Especially interesting to all was the talk by Dr. Jan Stuchlý from Charles University on the use of a novel computational method called RNA velocity to characterize phenotypic drift and lineage switching in leukemia.
A final fun highlight was the EHA Groove on Saturday evening, where participants gathered for an informal night of music and conversation, featuring a live performance by Haema Tone. Special thanks to Francesco Cerisoli for making this possible, to everyone who visited the booth, and to all who contributed to making EHA 2025 a memorable and impactful event. Being part of this congress was a valuable experience for the FANTOM network, both scientifically and socially, and a strong reminder of the power of collaboration in advancing hematology research. We invite you to join us in Stockholm for the 2026 AGM and continue shaping the future of hematology together.
