Introduction
I’m Carla Vazquez Amos and I’m a PhD student at the University of Cambridge, Department of Pathology.
I’m from Spain and moved for my undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology to Bath, UK. During this, I undertook a year-long project in a biopharmaceutical company called MedImmune, which has since merged with AstraZeneca. This project excited me to pursue further research experience!
Now I’m in Cambridge, in the laboratory of Prof. Suzanne Turner. Suzanne’s group mainly focuses on understanding the origins, evolution and mechanisms of resistance of childhood cancer. This includes Burkitt’s lymphoma, neuroblastoma and anaplastic large cell lymphoma.
My project involves researching the origins of ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma, to try to understand why children develop this cancer. I perform various different laboratory techniques and I am learning bioinformatics. Additionally, I’m currently the student representative of the consortium, so I also attend meetings with the supervisory board to represent our views.
I’m actually an associate member of the FANTOM network, so feel really lucky to be a part of it! The UK Research and Innovation public body (UKRI ESPRC) underwrote approved Horizon Europe grants from UK scientists. Our biannual FANTOM meetings are always educational, interesting and inspirational. Particularly as we work on a rare cancer, the international perspectives and connections are invaluable to drive the field forwards and bring us closer to improving treatment for this disease.
Outside of the lab, I enjoy playing volleyball, swimming in the lido, reading fiction, and walking with dogs!
